We've Turned The Corner....YAY!

Well over the last two months we have been struggling to get my gorgeous little man to take solids and to aslo sleep during the day. I have been trying since Ryan was 6 months old to introduce solids and get him to have am/pm naps...but to no avail. In realisation his lack of sleeping during the day could be put down to hunger, although he wasn't crying as if hungry.

I was feeling like a failure as a mother and I was also placing a lot more pressure on myself due to Ryan's carer at Child Care, telling me he should be doing this and he should be doing that....I have battled these thoughts and feeling for two months. It doesn't help when you are constantly being told that his carer is worried that he isn't developing as fast as he should be. Although not all babies are the same I told her, but what would I know, I am a new mum and she has had 20 years child care experience and is an ex nurse.

I had made an appointment with our local CYH just for a health check and a bit of chat about getting my little man interested in solids and inturn hopefully help his developement. I was starting to get a little more paranoid than I already was.

Fast forward to Ryan's 8 month birthday.

This was the day that he successfully starting taking solids at child care. I was so happy, yet a little reserved at the same time, as prior he had been having solids only every other day, and it was affecting his weight. Nope from the 26th October he has been having 3 feeds a day, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, with his usual boob or bottle inbetween.

I am so excited, Ryan's little mouth opens up as soon as he sees the spoon coming, just like a baby birds at the thought of it's mother feeding it. For the first few days we had to use a second spoon as a distraction, something he could play with and get the feel off while playing with it in his mouth. But the last few meals have been an absolute delight...Ryan makes me feel so proud when he sits there and looks at me as if to say 'more'....

Inturn, now that he is taking solids his naps/sleep during the day are also starting to improve. We were lucky if we could get 20 - 30 mins out of him and no afternoon sleep. We are now up to 1 - 1 1/2 hours in the morning, and on good days about the same in the arvo, although some days will see him go without his afternoon nap. I am still working on this.

Nothing has made me feel so good as to see Ryan sitting in his little rocker with his mouth open in anticipation. My little man is growing up...

New Life, Love and Burying the Hatchet

New life.....

New life is so precious and something we should never take for granted, as my little 8 month old son sits next to me in his rocker, waving at everything (he has just learnt to wave, although he probably doesn't realise what he is going just yet) and talking away so sweetly....Love you Little Dude...

I had the pleasure of visiting a girlfriend and her newborn in hospital on Friday. Girlfriend is looking great and her little girl is divine.

Poor thing was taken from her mother straight away and put into an oxygen tent, where she still remains at the moment with a condition known as she has Hyaline Membrane Disease which means she has air leaked into the membrane surrounding the lung and so when she takes a breathe the lungs can't expand fully and she has to work very hard to breathe.

It was so hard seeing her in her little oxygen box, but take comfort in the thought that she is in good hands. You feel useless at times like this when there is nothing you can really do, but be there for her Mum, Dad and little Brother.

I just hope that is isn't too long before this new family are all together again under the one roof.

Love....

Michael, Ryan and I attended a gorgeous backyard wedding yesterday afternoon. The wedding of one of Michael's oldest friends (from Tasmania) to his now gorgeous wife. Wayne and Tracey celebrated their nuptials in front of family and friends in the prettiest garden....

On the arm of her father, Tracey looked radiant in a gorgeous handmade lilac/purple gown. Equally as gorgeous was her little escorts. Her two sons Jack and Blake, in their little white shirts and vests, and Mikayla her flowergirl. For their ages the kids were so well behaved.

In between the ceremony and the reception we thought we would take our little on home for a nap. This didn't happen with my little man screaming for the entire hour we were home.

So I fed him in the carpark of the reception in the hope it would settle him and lull him to sleep. This didn't work, but doing laps up and down bumpy paved paths and over grassy hills did. My little one finally petered out around 7:30pm after me doing laps of the tavern and golf course. He slept like and angel in his pram until and piper came in and started playing the bagpipes. A gift from the Bride to her Groom, to celebrate his Scottish ancestry.

The Bride and Groom and their guests dined and danced the evening away at a local tavern. Very pretty grounds as it is on a golf course with a rather large duck pond. It was a very family orientated evening with 4 - 5 newborn to toddlers sharing the occasion.

Burying the Hatchet...

It was at Wayne and Tracey’s wedding that the hatchet was buried between myself and a friend, Rachel. (I don't think I will call her an old friend, as I have only known her about 5 years).

This friend was to be one of my bridesmaids when Michael and married, only a few monetary issues raised their ugly heads only weeks before we were to walk down the aisle, with some fairly heated comments being passed back and forth, to the point I didn't even want her in the same room as I at our reception. We hadn't spoken for two years.

She was my bridesmaid from hell.

Her now husband, Justin and mine always kept in touch, but I was adamant I didn't want anything to do with her. I certainly didn't want to be attending anything social if she were to be there, cut off the nose to spite the face type thing. Apparently Rach always asked after me, but she had disrespected me so much I didn't want to know.

Well yesterday things changed. Maybe we have both changed, grown up more maybe. Rachael made the effort to come over and say hi, see how I was and also meet my little man, of whom she hadn't even seen yet at the ceremony. It was only brief, but it was a start. It was kinda weird for me, a bit awkward as I didn't know how I was feeling, or how I would feel towards someone I had so much resentment for. But I handled it. It didn't feel as bad as I thought it would.

Fast forward to the reception.... most of the guests had arrived. Justin (Wayne's best man) and Rach arrived not long before the bride and groom and mingled a little while. I don't really think either of them knew that many of the guests. Again we eventually ended up talking...I was feeling more comfortable with this.

By the end of the night we were basically inseparable, like nothing had happened (although her words will always be locked away in my mind). We did kinda mention our issue. Rach mentioning that we had all done/said some horrible things (in my mind I was like 'what did 'I' do wrong initially, I knew what she had done and said, but not me) but only to say that the past is exactly that, THE PAST...

I feel like we have gottten over things and moved on, or as Michael pointed out, maybe it was just me that hadn't moved on.

Girlfriends in Your Life

This poem was just sent to me by a girlfriend I hold very close to my heart, I think it epitomises everything about girlfriends in our lives.

GIRLFRIENDS IN YOUR LIFE

When I was little, I used to believe in the concept of one best friend, and then I started to become a woman. And then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, you will see the best in many friends.

One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man

Another friend is needed when you're going through things with your mum.

Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.

One friend will say let's pray together,

Another let's cry together,

Another let's fight together,

Another let's walk away together.

One friend will meet your spiritual need,

Another your shoe fetish,

Another your love for a good laugh, another will be with you in your season of confusion,

Another will be your clarifier,

Another the wind beneath your wings

Another your mentor.

Another your birthing partner (this one wasn't on the list, but is very close to my heart, love you Nanna S)

But whatever their assignment in your life, on whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or wherever you need them, whether to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back, or to hold you back from making, a complete fool of yourself ........

Those are your best friends.

It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many it's wrapped up in several.

One from 7th grade, one from high school, several from the college years, a couple from old jobs, on some days your mother, on others your sisters, and on some days your daughters.

Time passes, Distance separates, Children grow up, Love waxes and wanes. Hearts break, Careers end, Jobs come and go, Colleagues forget favours, Men don't call when they say they will BUT...........

Girlfriends are always there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach. The world wouldn't be the same without them, and neither would we.

When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.

Steak And (Ryan's) Kidneys

Well we have just gotten in from our appt with Professor Tan at the Women's and Children's Hospital where we have been having regular check ups on Ryan's little kidneys.

At 19 weeks gestation it was found that Ryan's had dialation (narrowing) of both the left and right Renal Pelves (tube that runs between the kidney and the bladder). Not an uncommon occurence in babies, but nonetheless something that needed to be monitored.

A scan again at 28 weeks showed that the right pelve was infact correcting itself, however the left one wasn't. Scans were done again when Ryan was 5 days old. Not a lot had changed. Right pelve improving, left still lagging behind. So we have been having scans and tests done every few months to track progess. The lasts tests that were done had shown a slight detioration in the left kidney, still pretty meaty, but retaining a little fluid.

Ryan is now 7 1/2 months old and we our last lot of tests done last week and yesterday with our specialist appt with Professor Hock this morning. A catheter test showed that Ryan isn't suffering from any urinary reflex (YAY), although a NMAG (nuclear dye test) done yesterday showed that Ryan's left kidney isn't working quite as much as the right. In a perfect world the kidneys should be sharing the load 50/50...Ryan's left kidney is functioning at 49% with the right at 51%, this is within norm and we along with his specialist are not too concerned. It is just a matter of keeping an eye on things and seeing how they develop (or not). So in 6 months time we go back for another ultrasound and a check up.

Just like playing Dress Ups

YAY....Mission Complete...

In about 4 weeks time I will be turning the big 35!!!! For some god unknown reason I decided that I wanted a party, a Costume Party. A WILD WILD WEST Party.

Well tonight after work I popped into the city to try on my cossie....MWAAAH...all sorted although I am not going to share the details here til after the event, sorry girls and guys.

Now I just have to get my toosh into gear and organise everything else, time and cash willing that is. I have booked a frozen cocktail machine for the night too, which should be fun, and oh so tasty...mmm. Also have my pinata sitting here waiting to be filled and hung too.

Have got blue check gingham tableclothes made up, but still want to get some haybails (for seating), old horseshoes (for a game of horseshoes) and even want to find some kids hobby horses, to maybe have hobby horses races with.

I can't wait to see all my great friends have a WILD evening in their WILD WILD WEST cossies.

Mmmm...just got to think about throwing something together for my little boy too....8 months old, think he would make the perfect little indian baby....ok, thinking caps on.

A Morning of Changing Faces and Girly Get Togethers..

What a busy/tiring day I had today. My morning started at about 6:10am, which with Ryan is becoming the norm. Today we headed into the city to try on costumes for my party in a few weeks time. It is so much fun dressing up and taking on a different persona...

My gorgeous man honed in on his cossie straight away, god it was so easy and he looks GREAT, but girls I ain't giving anything away. I had a costume in mind, but the sales (if that is what you call the people that work there, although they aren't selling are they, they are hiring) girl thought it was a little too big, althoughI had hired it once before, so she suggested that I pop back in Wednesday after to work to try on something else she had in mind....cool, I could do that, no dramas. So my man is kitted out for my WILD WILD WEST evening, I just have to look after myself and the little dude, Ryan.

The rest of the afternoon was spent with a great bunch of girls, enjoying each others company and great food. It was an afternoon where I could be me, not Ryan's Mum, as Ryan was at home, or out visiting with his Dad. It is nice to be able to go out and not feel guilty. I love meeting up with this bunch of chickens, we can be ourselves, share our troubles and laugh with each other and know we are not being judged...which I am sure wouldn't happen normally with a group of women.

We try to meet up regulary, which I think is great, we all lead such different lives, and all have different interests, but it was one common link that bought us together, that of getting married. We all, and I am PROUD to say this met through a website. We should never close ourselves off to other mediums as ways of making new friends.

I can say that I have met my best friend, and female soul mate through this website, and she and her gorgeous hubby became part of our family when the accepted the honour of becoming Ryan's Godparents.

Girls thanks for a great afternoon.

We Survived our First Week....YAY

Well end of the week for me came at 5:00pm yesterday...and I can happily say we have survived our first week of me being back at work and my little man at childcare....YAY .

Tuesday was hard...How was I?

Blubbering like an idiot from the moment I had gotten out of bed. God I felt so sick in my stomach, the nerves were definitely playing with me. After my shower I sat in the lounge and had my breakfast with my little man well I tried anyway, very hard when your fighting back the tears. He was just sitting in his rocker, cooing and gurgling away happily and giving me the biggest smiles ....

God how guilty did this make me feel .

Anyway I finished my brekkie and getting me ready for work before I packed his little back for his first day away from home. Michael is incharge of drop offs in the morning and I get the pick ups

One last cuddle and kiss and I knew I had to leave for work. I did find once I was on the road and at work I wasn't too bad, although I didn't really know how I was going to feel. I was so busy at work I hardly had time to stop, although this didn't see my mind wandering off onto my little man and thoughts of how he was.

I rung the child care centre around 2pm. Ryan was just about to have his 2nd bottle . I didn't know how he would go, as he has only ever had three bottle full stop. But he finished every last drop. Had some really good sleeps and just as much awake time.

Apparently the girls and team leaders from the other sections couldn't get enough of my little man , this made me feel so good . And all the other toddlers in his section loved him too.

Pick up time couldn't come quick enough for me. He had just woken up when I arrived at 5:20pm from almost an hours nap. He looked so cute sitting on his carer's lap all wrapped up in his ducky blanket. Took him a little while but it wasn't long before he was cooing and gurgling at me....oooh so sweet.

Michael rang me Wednesday saying that we has finishing work early so he would pick our little man up. He had had another good day. No grizzles, left 40 mls from his first bottle (little bugger that stuff is like gold) but took all of his second bottle and had four 45 minutes sleeps and was asleep when Michael picked him up.

He has been such a good boy, but I think he is a placid baby, unless he gets a tummy ache ...which are becoming fewer, so it is likely he is outgrowing them...YAY.

Yesterday morning Nan & Pop came down about 7:45am to pick him and his stuff up. Dad was like, I have already got the heater of for him, and we will go for a walk around to the shops later etc....it was so CUTE.

God they are almost as clucky as I am. I got back to their place about 5:30pm, so instead of picking him up and rushing home to feed him, I fed him there and then stayed for tea myself. Which will more than likely become a regular Thursday night thing.

Michael was there for tea aswell, but every other Thursday works until about 7:30pm'ish. So Mum suggested I stay for tea, to save being home by myself, which doesn't bother me, but it will be nice to have the company and two sets of spare hands if Ryan gets a little grizzly .

He takes around 150mls per feed from a bottle, so I have been able to express enough for the two feeds that I am away from him so far and haven't have to resort to the formula.

We had a good sleeping routine going while I was at home. Last feed anywhere between 8:00 and 10:00pm, followed by a bath and this would see him sleep til 6:00am, which would have worked out so well for when I was back at work. We will see how things change now I am back at work.

YAY ....I get my little man for 3 whole days. Feeding my little man myself, not from an EBM bottle. I must say I had enough stocked in the freezer and have been able to express enough at work for him this week that he hasn't needed formula, of which I have a tin in the cupboard....just in case.

Well a couple of hours ago, I found out that I am going to be an Auntie My Brother and his Wife are expecting their first on October 25th this year. She is 13 weeks.

They did know when they were down in March but didn't want to say anything before the 12 weeks. So being so close to term will mean they are unable to share in Ryan's naming day...

But the great news is we will be celebrating Ryan's first Christmas with his little cousin.

They are coming down for Christmas ...so it will be my Mum & Dad, Michael, Myself & Ryan and Mick, Cess & our little niece/nephew.

Wow to think 7 weeks ago I wasn't really anything (except pregnant) and now I am a mum to a gorgeous little boy and in 6 months time am going to be an Auntie too ....

Farewell My Friend, The Angels Are Calling....

Today, Monday 7th March, Myself, Michael and Ryan said a very sad farewell to a dear dear friend, John Follett.

John sadly passed away to make his journey to a better live on March 2nd, never getting the opportunity to meet our little son. He died just 4 days after Ryan was born.

We attended the funeral along with many, so many of John's family, friends and work colleagues over the years. I dont know how I managed to get through it. I was feeling sick with nerves and butterflies, wondering how I was going to say goodbye to a true gentleman.

The service went for about 1 1/2 hours. A touching tribute to a dear friend, reflecting on a life that was so full of love, life laughter and faith. It was so hard sitting there knowing that we weren't to see this wonderful man again, that he would never get to hold Ryan, officiate at Ryan's naming day (John, why couldn't you have hung on just a little longer old friend, I know that sounds selfish, but I didn't want you to go, it hurt too much).

Ryan was such a little angel through out the ceremony, he slept, while I openly wept at the loss of my friend, every now and then stealing glances at this precious little life alseep at my feet. It was a beautiful service, with John's casket being carried out the waiting chariot that was to deliver him onto the next life, through a guard of honour, made up of all his friends from the CFS, from the many districts in which John had volunteered.

Upon saying goodbye we placed handfuls of rose petals onto his casket. God I was beside myself. I kissed the casket but couldn't bring myself to say goodbye, just seeya later. We went and passed our condolences onto Rosalie and the girls before leaving to bring my new little life home for a feed and a sleep. We didn't need to say anything....

But the most special thing happened on the way home. We were parked out on the main road of the church and were about to pull off the kerb, when the hearse came out of the drive way next to us. Together we travelled the same road for about 3 kms, with John's casket in line with Ryan's car seat. Now some might find this morbid, but I took great strength in the thought, that it was John's way of looking after and over Ryan, the little boy he never got to meet. He was letting us know that he would always look over Ryan, his guardian angel.

Although I could not contain the tears, I felt so special that he had chosen to share some of his last few kilometres of his days on earth with us. The time come for us to part as we turned off, John went up and over the hill and out of sight, we waved his farewell but know he will never be far from us, as he will always be in our hearts.

Love you my special friend, and I know that you will always be looking out for our special little man, Ryan...

God Bless....

The Story of Ryan Mitchell Michael

Well I am not sure where to start with the story of Ryan Mitchell Michael’s birth…but to say that Michael and I are now of the thinking that things did actually start happening around 3am on Friday 25th February 2005. So please grab a coffee and your comfy pj’s, this could take a while.

I woke with what felt like serious period pain, but mistakenly just thought these were BH’s, as I was expecting to experience something different to what I had. These pains continued on and off for about 3 hours. I got up showered, had brekkie and went off to my Ob’s appt at 9:15am. That appt only took about 15 mins, so I was back in the car by 9:30am. OUCH…here came that feeling again. It felt like it last forever, but was probably only 3 – 5 mins. I got to work around 10’ish and gave Michael a call just to let him know that all was fine and our now little Ryan was 2 – 3/5’s engaged.

I had only been at work about ¾’s hour when the cramps came back. No one would have know what was going in within, as I didn’t really give any outward signs of what might be happening, as again I thought it might have just been BH’s, due to the fact that Ryan wasn’t due for a little while longer yet. I got through the day with no more pain.

I left work Friday, at about 5:10pm, my last day, looking forward to starting M/L on Monday and hoping to get a few days to myself. I got about 10mins away from home when the cramping started again. I had to stop to put some mail in the box and had this strange sensation, (and sorry if this is TMI) that I had wet myself, but only slightly…mmmm…. I knew I didn’t need to go to the toilet. Now I was really beginning to think that something was happening. I rang Michael at work to tell him what I had just experienced…and when he said ‘What ? Your waters have broken’ apparently the whole office went quiet. I told him not to come home, as it wasn’t that bad.

I pottered around the house, thinking not much of what was happening within. Until we got to about 6:30pm and the cramping was becoming more constant. I had started timing ‘these cramps’. 20mins apart and lasting for about 1 ½ mins. Because I still wasn’t convince that what I was experiencing the real deal, I stopped timing them. And just tried to get through the pain.

We rang the W&CH’s and asked them what they thought. Yes, I was getting the waves of pain, but not where I thought I should they should be starting. I thought I it would be like a wave washing over my stomach and ab’s not just in the lower abdominal region, so I told the hospital ‘no’, there were no really strong waves of pain (god how stupid was I). ‘OK…well it sounds like things are on the move, is that what you think?’ I answered ‘I was pretty sure they were’. Well it could be a long night so try and get some sleep .

I wasn’t hungry, but knew I should probably try and eat, as I hadn’t eaten since about 1:45pm. Michael heated some baked beans and cooked me some toast. I think I ate about 4 mouthfuls, I just couldn’t stomach anything.

I can’t exactly remember what time the next wave of cramps (contraction came along), but it was getting on in the evening somewhere around 9:30pm. We started timing these ones again, just to see what was going on. Mmm, 3 mins apart and lasting about 2mins. This time the pain had seen me using positions and techniques we had learnt in Antenatal classes. Breathing (with a really good breathing coach besides me, getting me through every wave of pain), kneeling, walking around, back rubs. Although it got to the point that none of these methods were providing any relief.

My abdomen was cramping to the point that I could hardly stand up…. I found myself sitting on the toilet for about ¾’s of an hour. The only place I could get comfortable, well as comfortable as one could be, being in what we now knew was labour, as I had ‘the show’ , yes pinkish/reddish tinged. This was definitely the real deal. My little man was telling me from within that he was on his way. Another gush of fluid. Michael was really sweet the whole time. Telling me to breathe, and even going to find me a squeezy stress ball.

All I wanted to do was lay down and rest . I managed to somehow get back to the bedroom when another excruciating contraction came on again. I got down on my knees on a pillow, leaning against the bed with Michael rubbing my back. I didn’t even make it into bed. The only place I was really semi comfortable was sitting on the toilet. Michael had gone out into the kitchen to do something. It was now 10:30pm. I got up to try and get back and all of a sudden, OMG, it was like Niagara Falls, I could believe what was happening. I had never seen so much fluid. I called Michael back and he just stood there and could believe his eyes either. It felt like forever that everything was emptying from me.

I got back to the toilet, but it was providing no relief at all. Now Michael was running around packing my bags for me, and one for Ryan. Ok we are now at about 11:00pm, this is where I start getting a little hazy. Again we rang the hospital. This time after telling them that contractions were 3 mins apart and still lasting about 1 ½ - 2 mins they suggested I came in for an examination. Michael rang my Ob, Julie just to let her know what was happening. She said the hospital would call her when she was needed. I really didn’t want to go to the hospital to only be told to turn around and go home…. there was no way I could’ve handled it.

I don’t remember much of the car ride up there. Only that I was in the back seat with Michael refraining from driving like a mad lunatic. But he did well. He gave me the little stress ball to concentrate on while he timed the contractions. Still no let up, 3 mins apart and lasting 2 mins. We pulled up at Women’s assessment and as I was getting out the car I felt like I was flooding again. I was examined and told that I was to be admitted straight away, 12:50am, Saturday 26th February. Even though I was only 2 cm dilated the fact that the contractions weren’t letting up and giving me anytime in between to rest was enough for them.

Michael went and shifted the car, and bought my bags in while they did a trace on my belly and checked the baby. Everything was fine and how it should be and Ryan was ok too. We finally made our way up to the delivery suite. I had a choice of wheelchair or walking. I chose the wheelchair, but the midwife convinced me to walk.

I don’t remember even getting into the lift. I do remember walking into my room and seeing a face I had seen for 4 weeks during antenatal classes. As it turned out Kayley, who took our classes on Thursday night was my midwife for the evening. This immediately put me at rest a lot . A face I knew. We had no birthing plan, other than to just go with the flow, we went in very open minded.

We had every intention of having an upright and mobile labour and birth, but my body had other ideas. There was no way I could stand up. I tried leaning into the bed, but ended up on the floor, kneeling, with my arms on the bed for support. We tried this for about ½ hour no relief at all.

Kayley had always remembered me saying that I loved baths, so she drew me a bath. God, what an exercise it was getting in, in between contractions. It felt good initially , if not a little cold, so the bath temperature was warmed up for me. I seriously thought the bath would help ease the pain. But I was wrong. It wasn’t having the effect I had hoped for. God, was I ever going to find a comfortable position.

It wasn’t long until another midwife Jo came in to see how things were progressing, and saw how strong the contractions were and suggested maybe I should try the gas. At this stage I was willing to try anything. The gas seemed to work a treat . Suck it in real deep when contractions came on and the slowly breathe out as they eased. I remember this going on for hours, as the Kayley was doing 15 minutes ob’s on Ryan. I remember about an 1 ½ - 2 hours worth of obs.

Slowly the pain was becoming too much to bear, the gas wasn’t doing its thing. I remember being told I had suck a tank dry and they had to replace it. This was when the contractions where at their worst (as far as I was concerned). Ok, back onto the gas….suck, suck, suck. I was on the gas more that I wasn’t, which was indeed quite a trip. Kayley and Jo decided and sort of asked if I would like the gas turned up. We had turned the levels up as far as was possibly without causing any problems.

I had Michael and Al by my side the whole time, taking it in turns helping me with the gas and the drinks. Letting each other have a break, refuel themselves, take pit stops, whatever they needed to get each other through this long night. I think there were even a few phone calls in there.

I remember the sensation of water being poured over my back a few times, and this felt like bliss. It may not have eased the pain but still felt good. Keep in mind had been in the bath for about 5 hours. My feet had shrivelled something bad and where aching as much as the contractions hurt. Barrier cream was bought in and Al, and Kayley began to massage this into my feet, while Michael was up looking after me with sips of water and the gas.

It was decided to get me out the bath, as both Ryan and I were starting to cook and needed to be cooled down. Ok, so out of the bath. It was such an effort getting into the bath, but getting out of the bath was hell. Especially when you had been on gas for the last 5 hours and lost parts of the night to it.

I vaguely remember getting out the bath, with the support of Kayley, Michael and Al, to be told that there was a bean bag right in front of me and to try laying on my belly for a while so ob’s and an internal could be done. This bit I do remember. The beanbag right in front of me and me falling like a tree just having been lopped….TIMBEEER.

At 6am (and I can only go by Michael and Al’s recollections) an Internal done I was now 8cms. The contractions still weren’t letting up, just as they hadn’t at the start of the journey…. I remember hearing Al ask Megan (the change of shift midwife) if it were too late too introduced an epidural. It wasn’t. It was offered to me and I took it. I figured I had been brave enough. I think it took about ¾’s hour for the anaesthetist to come in. So from the beanbag I had to get onto the bed.

This must have been where I blacked out. I remember being told I had to get up onto the bed and prepped for the midwife, and this meant getting out of and up from the beanbag. I am sure I was like a rag doll. I don’t remember getting onto the bed. When I came to or the gas had finally left my system I remember asking was I on the bed, I don’t remember getting onto it. Once the anaesthetist came in it was time to insert the epidural. I was to sit so still, yeah right a preggo woman having contractions trying to sit still . You must be joking. But we got there. I was asked to be a still as I could while the needle was put in. I tried cutting a deal, I will try and sit still as long as you get that thing in as quick as you can. 7:00am (again from Michael and Al’s recollections) the best drug around was introduced to my body. It took about 20 mins for the effects to start working. But WOW when it did, it was heaven. No more pain . Somewhere in here I remember telling Al that I loved her. Poor Michael I don’t think I told him, that and was a bit concerned at how feral I might have gotten throughout the night.

My Ob, Julie was rung and informed that I was now 8cm dilated. I was entering the home stretch of this journey. She would be in around 11:00am. Those three hours were the easiest of the whole night . Although I could still feel the goings on within, I was in no pain. Poor Michael and Al were looking so tired, but then they had spent all night with me too. As I said they never left my side (not for long anyway). And for this I am truly grateful and loving .

I was so relaxed, that they both took it in turns to go and get breakfast while the other snoozed in the chair while I was alert and so with it I couldn’t believe it. I lay there with this little person within preparing to enter the world, watching my two partners snoozing contently after a long night, one in the chair and the other on the beanbag. Some stage soon after this I managed to doze off as well. My nap since I had gotten up at 7:00am the morning before. I couldn’t have dozed for long as watching the clock for 11:00am’ish seemed so far away. I could hear via the monitors when the contractions were approaching, and also could feel the tightening in my stomach, but still no pain. The epi was topped up 3 times, but it got me through.

Julie came in around 11:30, I remember saying that it seemed like only yesterday that we had seen each other. It was. I had an Ob’s appt the Friday morning. After a few more obs I was given the go ahead to start pushing. It was great. I knew when the push yet still felt no pain. I pushed for about an hour, as many as four humongous pushed per contraction, I felt like I had so much strength to keep going when Julie sort of said ‘Well you have been trying so hard for the last hour and I think it is time’…Myself, Michael and Al just all froze and looked at each other dreading the words we ‘thought’ we may hear, that Julie was going to say it is time for a C. Instead she said ‘I think we’re going to have to help this little man out’. I knew I was fine to keep going but Ryan was getting tired. So the forceps were introduced. The three of us gave a big sigh of relief. Forceps, yep we could do that, although it would mean being cut.

Cut done, forceps in use and with about another 2 big pushes, my little boys head had crowned . Another push and his head was out. I was told to stop pushing for a minute so he could turn naturally. This is where his daddy took over from Julie. Michael got himself ready to deliver his son into this world. Michael had hold of his head and shoulders. Ok one more push, and into Michael’s arms I delivered Ryan Mitchell Michael, our perfect little prince.

The look on Michael’s face was priceless. I am sitting here in tears recalling this part. I looked at Michael and just burst into tears, together we had bought this precious little gift into the world. I looked over at Al, she was looking at Michael and then turned to look at me, we just bawled our eyes out .

Michael then went on to cut the cord and place our son on my chest. God I can’t even remember what that felt like. But he was beautiful. A little bit beaten and bruised from the forceps, but still beautiful. I was asked what his name was. From October it was always going to be Ryan Mitchell Michael, until Michael starting giving a second thought to another name we had come up with, but I think deep down it was always going to be Ryan. I held him up to his Daddy and his Auntie Al and said ‘Well is he a Brock or a Ryan’. Didn’t have to wait long he was a Ryan. Our little prince now had a name for real.

Ryan looked/s very much like his daddy. Michael’s eyes and mouth. While he has my nose. He was so alert to everything around him, and you could just tell that he was trying to take so much in already. This brand new world, I can’t imagine what he must have been thinking. While I was getting stitch up and cleaned up Michael gave Ryan his first bath. Not that I could see it. But I am sure it must have been a wondrous moment for Michael. Just as this whole 9 month journey has been wondrous for all of us.

I can’t say this enough but I really wanted to thank my loving husband Michael for the support and strength he showed me over the last 9 months, and more importantly the last 24 hours (during labour) and also to Al for being there with me too …. I know you had a dress fitting sweetie, and the fact you weren’t going to leave our sides until the job was done, and you met your little Godson face to face, means more than I will ever be able to sum up with words.

One Life Begins Another One Ends....

Well today was my second day home from hospital after having given birth to my gorgeous little man, Ryan only 4 days ago.

Michael was at work as per the norm and I was glowing in the task of motherhood. Sharing 'my time' with my little man in the form of feeding time (morning tea) I was about to quietly read the paper. Nothing different there, always read the births and deaths. The phone rang and it was Mum, 'Have you read the paper yet?', 'No', as she new I always checked the births and deaths. 'I think you should look in the deaths' was all she said.

Mum stayed on the line while I flipped to the Memorium notices....scanning the names, and suddenly my heart sank and I just totally lost it, and I mean lost it. My dear dear friend John Follett had passed away on Wednesday, the day before I was due to come home, fours days after Ryan was born. I was devastated. I didn't even know he was sick (he had kept that from me), and he didn't even get the chance to meet Ryan, how could he....I was in a total state of shock, here I was feeding this new precious little life only to read that a life just a dear to me had ended.

Mum and Dad offered to come and sit with me for awhile, while I got my head around such tragic news. I wanted to ring Rosalie (John's Wife) but didn't know whether that would be appropriate or not. The last time we had spoken was at Christmas time, we always shared letters and card, although I sent them a text message the day after Ryan was born sharing with them the joyous news. Little did I know that John himself was in hospital facing the biggest battle of his life, to live.

I got the courage up to ring Rosalie, and was so glad I did, as was she that I had rung. God had just lost her husband, her soul mate, yet she was so strong. That is what a believe in faith does...
She told me John's story and how he was aware that I had given birth to Ryan and was so happy for us (although secretly knew they would never get the chance to meet). John had married Michael and I back on 20th September, 2003. All I could keep saying was OMG I am so sorry, and saying how much we loved both herself and John, all the while choking on my tears, but still Rosalie was strong.

The funeral was to be on the 7th March. I told Rosalie that the three of us were going to be there not matter what. Although with a new born she didn't expect it. There was no way I wasn't going to say goodbye to this kind and gentle soul. Who had been my rock many times over the years. I was my turn to be there for Rosalie and her family.

With life comes death, this is so true...heartbreaking but true.

Ryan's Birth (from Auntie Al's perspective)

Once again, the BIGGEST congratulations to both Michael and Tanya on the birth of Ryan. As Shari has already wonderfully said, both Tanya and Ryan are doing well. Tanya has asked that I share my perspective of Ryan's birth cause there were times that she can't remember what happened.

Tanya's labour (all up) went for about 18 hours and I got THE call from Michael at 1pm this morning saying that Tanya had been admitted to hospital and that she was 2cm dilated with contractions occurring about every 5 mins. Gotta say that drive to the hospital felt really really long even though it was only about 10 mins and I was feeling quite apprehensive about how I would find both Tanya and Michael when I arrived as I'd never been around a woman in labour pains before! After first not being able to find a carpark (at 1.30am in the morning!) and then trying to work out how to actually get INTO the hospital (I finally worked out that I had to press the intercom and speak to someone before they'd let me in), I got to the birthing suite and Tanya was in the bath having a contraction. I was seriously hoping I was going to be useful to her and Michael and the stuff I learned in the ante-natal classes I'd attended would all come back to me.

Tanya's contractions kept getting stronger and she started sucking on the gas (sorry, can't remember the name of it). This seemed to help a lot and Michael jumped into the bath to help support her while I helped with cold flannels and pouring hot water onto her back and stomach. They were definitely getting stronger as they had to up the gas a few times and I remember at one stage Tanya got the giggles cause she felt all tingly and spacey. She eventually had to get out of the bath cause she was shrivelling up like a prune, so she ended up on a bean bag. Her contractions by this stage were REALLY REALLY strong and the gas definitely wasn't helping her by now and neither were Michael and my strategically placed back rubs, so Tanya requested an epidural. By this time I think it was about 6am and after another examination she was now 8cm dilated. What a woman!!

The anaethetist put in the epidural at about 7am and after that, even though she could still feel the contractions she was SO much more relaxed and eventually couldn't feel them at all. Michael and I both went and got some brekkie and then we dozed for about 10 mins. We thought it was quite amusing that Michael and I were the ones that fell asleep while Tanya was all perky and chatty and she was the one doing all the work!

Julie, her OB came in at about 11.30am and gave her another examination and by this stage she was fully dilated and allowed to start pushing. Tanya pushed for about an hour and little Ryan just didn't seem too keen on entering the world so Julie helped him out with forceps. A couple of minutes later out popped his head and then Michael helped Ryan out the rest of the way and then cut the cord. It was the most amazing emotional experience and I couldn't help but cry with Tanya. Ryan was placed on Tanya's chest and Michael could be heard repeating 'how surreal' a few times. He is the most gorgeous little man and I noticed his eyes and lips were similar to Michael's and he just kept staring up at us with his gorgeous little eyes trying to work out who all these big people were.

After a little while Michael gave him his first bath while Tanya got unhooked from everything and then ate a bit of lunch. It was so cute seeing Michael try to put this TINY little nappy onto Ryan, and I was absolutely no help to him at all cause I'd never changed a nappy in my life, but he did it, with little Ryan looking at him as if saying, 'Come on Dad!!'

Tanya's parents had arrived an hour or two before this, so they came in to see their grandson and I stayed for a bit longer and then left the new Douthie family to get acquainted and so Tanya could have a shower and get some sleep.

Tanya sweetie, you did an AMAZING job and you were absolutely brilliant the whole way through. I admire you for everything you went through. It was such a beautiful experience that I've tried to put into words but I don't think my words will ever sum up my emotions.

Half Way Through The Journey....

Well little Bump we are half way through this journey that is pregnancy.

How am I feeling? Well still pretty good I must admit. My weight had only just risen, and not by much either. At the moment I am 70kgs. Only a 1kg increase in 2 months. I seem to be well over the tiredness I was feeling.

I am still getting a touch of sciatica every now and then too, although the pain seems to more intense and last a little longer each time.

Sometimes I feel so hungry and that I could eat everything in sight, and then other days all I can manage is a mouthful. Strange, huh.

I am still not craving anything yet, although I am craving to be able to feel you inside of me.

Oh yeah, I now have a pregnant bump. You can actually tell that Mummy is pregnant, and that you are there.

Daddy and I got to see on you again on Saturday morning (16th October, 2004) as Mummy had to have another scan, just to make sure everything was fine an that you were growing nice and strong.

You are such a little wriggle pot already, I can only wonder what you will be like when we bring you home.

It was funny, we could see you wriggling and squirming around inside, but I haven't been able to feel you from within yet. This is because you are sitting right up against Mummy's back. We are hoping that in time you will move more towards Mummy's tummy. But only time will tell.

Please move for Mummy little Bump, as she would feel very upset, and robbed of one of the most beautiful parts of pregnancy, being able to feel her little person from within.

Mummy and Daddy love you very much Bump, and look forward to being able to see you again, or maybe even feel you for the first time. Love you always Bump Mummy & Daddy

I Know Who You Are....

Ok, it is actually 17 weeks and 5 days...

Still feeling good, although think I have been getting a touch of sciatica through my left thigh. My weight has remained fairly stable, still only 68.5kgs. But am finding that my pants are starting to get a little uncomfortable around my thickened waist, and the lovely symptoms of a runny/blocked nose, not unlike hayfever and sinus. Ah, the little things they don't tell you about.

Had an Ob's appt on the 28th September, just a routine check up. No test results were back as yet. My Blood pressure was up a little from the first visit. First visit was 120/40, on the 28th it was 130/40 (I guess this could possibly be due to the stress of waiting on the Downs results). I am still not feeling pregnant, and am not looking pregnant (in my eyes) although my Ob says there is a slight bump there.

Bumps little heart was beating away so nicely in there. It felt good being able to hear that my baby, our baby was still with us.

In my last entry I wrote about having to have an amnio done as the bloods tests for Downs Syndrome came back extremely high.

After taking it easy for the 5 days following the test we recieved the best news any expectant parents could hope for on the 1st October, our baby showed no abnormalities what so ever.

We do however know the sex of our little prince/princess, but am not going to reveal it in this diary, as we never know who may be reading (sorry guys).

Well little Bump, what has been happening in the outside world, while you have been hiding within.

Mummy and Daddy have been having a little bit or work done around the house, but Mummy's favourite bit is her new garden that she gets in a couple of weeks time (17th Oct 2004). You are going to have the most gorgeous garden to play in when you are old enough, and the cutest picket fence for you to peer through.

You went to your first football game yesterday at Adelaide Oval, I don't know if you enjoyed it or not, but I know that Mummy and Daddy did. Daddy wants to buy you your own picket at Adelaide Oval.

Now that we know who you are we can start preparing for your arrival. Painting your little space, buying your nursery furniture, and buying the cutest of clothes. Wondering what sports or interests you are going to have, who you are going to look like. I really hope you have your Daddy's dark complexion and thick hair, although I would hope that there is a little of me in there somewhere.

Be good in there my little Bump although maybe you could let me know that your in there.

For now our little prince/princess I will say goodnight and let you know that Mummy and Daddy love you very much and can't wait to see you again when Mummy has more pictures taken of her tummy on the 16th Ocober.

Life at 16 Weeks

Week 16 of this amazing journey.

How am I feeling in myself....pretty good actually.

My tiredness seems to be waning...my appetite is still reasonably healthy. I am finding that is isn't taking much to fill me up meal wise, but I am looking to eat more often. My weight has remained fairly stable at 67kgs. I guess the weight gain will come soon enough.

You know the 'if you don't hear from us' phone call....well I actually got that phone call on the 6th September, 2004.

As far as my baby being a downs baby went my aged related risk was 1 in 700 (which was really good), well my bloods come back today and with the scan I now have a 1 in 34 chance of carrying a downs baby.

Now I know that still mean I have a 97% chance of carrying a normal baby, but the fact that my OB has tentatively already made an appt for me scares the hell out of me...I had a feeling something wasn't quite right when I read the report with the scan...

What causes Down syndrome???

The events that cause Down syndrome occur before conception and lead to a fertilised egg with an abnormal number of chromosomes in each cell - 47 rather than the normal 46.

Well Wednesday (22nd September) afternoon we had another albeit brief encounter with this little person within...due to an increased risk of Bump having downs we decided to go ahead and have an Amnio down. This would confirm for us whether I was carrying a downs baby ot not, and would also allow us to find out the sex of our unborn. According to my OB, Julie everything went well, we just have about 6 - 7 days left to await results.

After the amnio was done the sonographer let us spend a little time with Bump. My, how he/she has grown and very inquisitive and still a wriggle worm.

It was actually very comforting to know the Bump is still around and kicking (although I have yet to experience those little 'flutter's). Only being 16 weeks I am still not feeling pregnant, so it was very precious to be able to see that our little Bump is ok.

In just over a week or so we will know if there a little leading lady or man joining us....CAN'T WAIT....and then again (everything going well) in the next 4 weeks will get to meet our little prince or princess again.

We Finally Meet

Week 12 of this miraculous journey, and sharing myself constantly with this little person within.

I still find myself looking for Chicken Baguettes. Although last night I just had to have a Cheeseburger from McDonalds. Some night my excursions to the toilet are worse than others, which can get quite frustrating but I guess it is all part and parcel of bringing this new little person into our lives.

What has happened in Mummy, Daddy & Bump's life this week....

Mmmmm....Mummy is feeling very much like and old lady at the moment, but I say this only in respect to the time I go to bed. Bed time for me now seems to be 8:00 - 8:30 pm. Daddy thinks this is weird, until Mummy explained to him that of other girls she knows are going to bed at the same time as their bodies are going through a lot at the moment to produce this wonderful little live within....Daddy know thinks Mummy is a bit more normal....poor Daddy he sits up on his own til his bedtime.

On Wednesday (25-08-04) night we took you to visit your new Child Care Centre, the place that you will visit everyday (while Mummy and Daddy sadly have to go to work, to always make sure you have nice things and want for nothing) and learn and grow and make so many new friends. Mummy and Daddy were really impressed with what they saw...new gardens, new toys, and really nice people that I know you are going to come to like to.

The most special part of the week for Mummy and Daddy was yesterday morning (28-08-04) when we got to meet you from within for the very 1st time.

OMG I think it is only just starting to really hit me as I write this, you are real, you are in there, although Mummy can't feel you yet. 10 tiny fingers, 10 tiny toes and the cutest little button nose (just like Mummy's) and you are only 6cm long, with the funniest little froggy legs...

We think you are going to be a little devil, which makes use think you are going to take after your Mummy. You are such an active little thing, we can see you being a little wriggle worm when we bring you home. You wouldn't lay still for the ultrasound yesterday. The doctor was just wanting to make sure you were ok, but you were intent of moving around on her all the time. Mummy couldn't help but laugh.

Daddy was so over awed at being able to meet you too....

We gave Grandma and Grandpa their very first photo of you yesterday and they were so proud. Grandpa more so, that his little girl was now carrying a special little person of her own.

You meet your Uncle Mick for the first time yesterday too, and he was very excited to be taking photo of his new little niece/nephew back home to your Aunty Cess.

Don't worry little Bump, you get to meet your Aunty Cess in just a few months when Grandma, Grandpa, Mummy and Daddy take you on your first holiday to Queensland (that is where Uncle Mick and Aunty Cess live), to share Christmas with you Aunty and Uncle and they celebrate their first Chistmas as Husband and Wife and also the buying of their first home.

Well our little Bump within....Mummy and Daddy are so happy to have finally met you, and we hope that you love us as much as we already love you...our precious little prince/princess...Mummy has an idea what you are, but wants to wait a little longer before she says anything. Can't wait to see you again in 8 weeks.

Sending all our love within, Mummy, Daddy and Boofy

Life at 11 Weeks

Wow 11 weeks of having this little life growing and developing inside....it seems so long ago that we found out your were now part of our lives.....

It is a weird feeling, knowing your pregnant, but not really feeling any different, apart from a few little symptoms, it almost doesn't feel real, more surreal I guess....until that first time I get to meet our baby via ultrasound....

I am not feeling as tired as I have been, although there are still some days I feel really flat (especially at the moment with Michael being off his feet)...my boobs have stopped hurting for now, but am waiting for the next growth spurt.

My many nightly excursions to the toilet seem to be settling a little to at the moment, but I know as Bump gets bigger those excursions will become more frequent.

The one food I seem to be wanting a lot of at the moment is Chicken, which can't be a bad thing. It could be a lot worse I guess, like McDonalds and Chocolate cake. Although I am finding that some foods are taking days to find their way out of my system. (if you know what I mean), which seems to find me feeling rather bloated and uncomfortable every couple of days. Elevit = constipation, Panadiene (in pregnancy) = constipation, Pregnancy = constipation. Mmmm it is one of those things they don't warn you about....

Hello little 'Bump'...that is our little pet name we have given you, so much cuter that 'it' or 'the baby'....so we call you 'Bump' although you are not an outwardly visible bump yet, you are still our 'Bump'...

Well our little one, it has been a little while since I have written to you, so I thought I had better sit down and say hello.....

What has been happening with Mummy and Daddy since I last wrote?

You finally got to meet your Godmother Jodi and Godfather Al and their little brood, Cody, Jake and Little Al on the 24th. Mummy and Daddy went to down to watch the Footy (you WILL be a Crows supporter) with them, as we try to do regularly....Auntie Jo has one other Godchild, but you will be Uncle Al's first....

Mmmm...I thought you were going to curse Mummy with the dreaded Mr. Morning Sickness....

You certainly didn't like what I had for breakfast on the 26th July, but I was a big brave Mummy (getting practice in, at being brave for when you fall over and hurt yourself or are ill) and went to work feeling bad all day. I got home from work and went straight to bed....was feeling very jitter and cold. I couldn't warm not matter how hard I tried. You're Daddy was so concerned....

The next morning (Tuesday 27th) wasn't much better....again you refused to enjoy the breakast that I shared with you. (Unappreciative child. You will learn early on to eat what is put in front of you....). I was left feeling so weak and tired, that I couldn't face another day at work....so I stayed in bed.

But you know what 'Bump'? For those few days I was blaming you, I don't think it was your fault at all....I think it was a 48 hour bug. Well at least that I what I am saying as I have been fine since....so I am sorry for blaming you for making me sick, can you forgive Mummy?

You recieved some gorgeous flowers the day I went back to work from your Uncle Mick & Auntie Cess, who are both very happy for Mummy and Daddy and are looking forward to meeting you.....

Even though we are yet to do your room up yet, you spent your first two nights (13th/14th August) in your own room (with Mummy of course) and it wasn't scary at all....You had a special friend on the bed both nights too. Dee (Mummy and Daddy's dog) slept next to Mummy and you and kept us company.

Poor Daddy got two spend those two nights on his own in Mummy and Daddy' bed, with no one to keep him company, as he needed a little more room than normal to sleep. Daddy had a very sore ankle and needed to have it fixed so that when you get bigger he could run around and play with you, chase you with his ankle hurting...

Today, Daddy and I had our first appointment with the doctor that is going to be looking after Mummy and you until I bring you home from Hospital. Her name is Julie and she seem really nice....She checked Mummy's blood pressure, heart beat and even weighed me.....69 kilo's. We go to see her again in 6 weeks. So in 6 weeks time, Mummy and Daddy may just get to put a little face to your name when we have our first ultrasound.

Next Saturday (28th August) Mummy is having a scan done on her belly and a blood test done just to check that you are ok and developing as you should, and not sick or likely to get sick....

If we meet then, or we hear your tiny heart beat for the first time Mummy and Daddy will be so happy.....if not we will see you in 6 weeks....

Til then little Bump, Mummy, Daddy & Boofy (Dee) love you very much...

Dreams Do Come True

Here were are 20 days after ovulation and I took a HPT yesterday morning. It was a BFP....

So it seems my little one was actaully sharing my thoughts with me from within and I just didn't know it, bloody little devil....oh well just like his/her mother...

Good evening my little prince/princess, wow what can I say...yesterday morning at 4:30am (3rd July 2004) Mummy woke Daddy up with the nicest surprise he could ever hope for....a little blue positive (+) sign on her Home Pregnancy Test....

Your Daddy was so happy, while I think Mummy couldn't quite believe it. Although I had deeply wondered if the changes that were starting to take place in my body was actually you making your presence felt, But believe me nobody wants you more than I do....than we do....

I haven't even given birth to you yet and already you are wearing me out each day. You are making me want to go 'wees' all the time, (my god what is it going to be like as you get bigger) and my boobs are getting sorer as you get bigger...Stop It!

There were some very special people in Mummy and Daddy's lives that were eagerly awaiting the outcome of Mummy's little test. Your future God Aunties Shaz and Al were over the moon, and I think your God Uncle Brent was quitely stoked aswell. They were going to have very special little person in their lives.

Your future God Mother, Auntie Jo was screaming out to world at the top of her lungs 'We're having a baby, Mummy and I (Jodi) are having a baby, she was so excited that your God Father, Uncle Al had to remind her that Daddy had a very big part in you now being part of our lives....

Your Nanna and Pop were ecstatic when they heard the news at 7:30 Saturday morning...they have been waiting so long for Mummy to finally have a special little person of her own, and when they met your Daddy, they knew he would be the one that would share Mummy's dream.

Nanna Douthie was also very pleased that you are going to sharing our lives...although she doesn't live close by it doesn't mean that she loves you any less....and I know the first time she meets you she will fall in love with you...

Your Uncle Mick and Auntie Cess have yet to be told the most wonderful news, but I know that they are going to be so happy, and love you just as much as we do....

You had your first visitors yesterday morning and recieved your first present from Nanna and Pop...me thinks you are going to one spoilt little person. You have been given a little bib with Baby Taz on it and some face washers. Quite fitting I think....a little devil bib, for Mummy and Daddy's little Devil.

I think you are going to be a little socialite. You attended your first dinner party last night. This is where you met your God Auntie Shaz, and your God Auntie Al and God Uncle Brent....your Auntie Shaz bought 'us' our first present. A gorgeous little diary for Mummy and Daddy to share with you...and record of you journey, how you came to be and when you came into our lives, until the first time we wave you off to school.

Although you are not old enough just yet to comprehend or understand what I am writing, but when you are old enough Mummy and Daddy are going to share this with you too....

But for now I will keep my thoughts, feelings and experiences right here, so I know where they are and I don't loose them. I don't want to forget anything that our new journey is going to throw at us or lets us experience....

I am getting these excited little butterflies at the moment ( as I am writing this) at the thought of bringing you into the world, our lives and our home in 9 months time...

Til then our little Prince/Princess I will keep you protected within....

Love Mummy & Daddy xxooxxoo

The Waiting Game Begins....

To our yet to be conceived little Prince/Princess (or maybe you are nestled away safely within sharing my thoughts and I just don't know it yet)...

Mummy and Daddy want you to know that we are doing everything possible to bring you into our lives....our special little evenings (13th/15th) filled with so much love where everything was focused on creating you have now passed..the wait begins.

Today sees us with only 3 more sleeps before I HPT (and hope that your Auntie Flo doesn't come for a holiday)...it has been such an anxious 2 week for me, I think it would only get worse the more cycles you had to test...although Daddy is taking a wait and see approach...

I am getting impatient and wanting to test NOW! But I know all good things come to those who wait...

Love Mummy and Daddy

A Diary to my Unborn

Wow, my first diary entry....

For those who don't know me, I'm Tanya (33 1/2). I met my now DH, Michael (30) 3 1/2 years ago.

Together we bought our first home in January 02, got engaged in February 02 and committed ourselves to each in September 03. We have been married now for 8 months.
We are now ready for and feel the time has now come in both our lives to bring a special little person into our lives, be it a little prince or princess. We want to create our own little dynasty....

So as of last night (Saturday 29/05/2004) we are contraceptive free....WOOHOO. I am due for AF's on Tuesday 1st June(spotting)/Wednesday 2nd June(Red)....which will make that special little point in time the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th June...

I actually can't believe that I am no longer on it after 12 years. I get butterflies just thinking about it, excited butterflies though, and Michael has been counting down the days since we had decided I would come off it.

I want to keep this diary for you, our precious little (yet to be concieved) Prince/Princess, to let you know how just how much Mummy and Daddy love you and look forward to making you a part of our lives for 9 months and then finally getting to meet you and hold you in our arms......

Til then our Prince/Princess.....

My Wedding Speech...

To break from tradition I refused to say "honour and obey"......I didn't wear a white dress and I am definitely not going to keep quiet at the reception. Michael will testify that I always try to get the last word in...

It is true to say that a bride's wedding day is just as special for her parents as it is for her. They have watched their daughter grow from a newborn baby totally dependant, to a grown women full of independence arriving at her wedding day. It is not often that we as children get an opportunity to thank our parents publicly for all they've done for us. I ask that you bear with me as I take this moment to do just that.

As a little girl I can remember Mum and Dad always tucking me in and kissing me goodnight, covering my scraped knee with a Band-Aid, holding my hand while walking me to school, helping me with my homework. As the years passed and I was finding out about live, love and heartache, there they were. Good old Mum and Dad, always ready with a big heart and even bigger hanky ready to wipe away the tears.

My first very special thank you must be to my wonderful parents, Brian and Margaret. The support, encouragement and love that you have shown me over the years has been enormous.
I am the person you see before you today because of these two very special people. They taught me to believe in myself and that anything I wanted to do in life; I could do, if I set my mind to it.

They also taught me to be independent from a very young age. I'm sure Michael would NOT thank them for this as I can be incredibly stubborn sometimes as a result, in fact if I was a character from the Little Mr and Little Miss books, without a doubt I would be Little Miss Independent - but it always made me aware that when I did get married, if I got married, it would be to the right man at the right time and that is certainly true. I was given a fantastic education and they instilled in me values that I hope to bring to my marriage with Michael. I can only hope that I can create the same feeling of welcome and happiness in our home as they have always had in theirs...

Mum and Dad I love you both so much and it is difficult to express the gratitude that I have for this wonderful day. So much time and effort has gone into every detail. My parents have truly provided me with the wedding of my dreams and it is only with wonderful memories that I will think of this day forever.

A little under 3 years ago, when I first met Michael I had just come out of a five year relationship and definitely wasn't thinking about, let alone looking for another relationship. So it is a little surprising to find myself standing here beginning a new chapter of my life as Mrs Douthie.

One person that I must thank, or some (light heartedly) might say blame for us all being here tonight, is a good friend. Win Johnson. Winnie, Winnie, Winnie (possibly get the bridal party to go oi, oi, oi here). I thank you for convincing me to put a tape in for Blue Heelers and come out bowling instead of staying home on my first night back from down south. As little girls we always dream of dressing up like princess' or brides. Well today I got to live that dream and in part it is because of you.

I know Michael's has formally thanked the bridesmaids, but hey they're my bridesmaids, so I am going to steal part of his thunder. Wendy, Cecelia, and Jodi thank you for everything. I'd realised that I had chosen well on my hen's night when Wendy and Jodes went out of their way not to remove temptation but in trying to convince temptation to stay, alas temptation was no longer a problem. Cess, although you couldn't be there to share it with us you were there in spirit. Seriously though, you have all been a wonderful help in preparing for this day and more importantly wonderful friends in every sense of the word.

Wendy and to you Craig, I want to thank you both especially for the friendship, love and support you have shown me over the last 7 years. In those first 5 years of our friendship, living so far from Mum and Dad you guys became my family, and showed me I much support and love in a time where it was truly needed. Your door was always open to me, and a bed always at the ready, damn I missed out on those pink pancakes though. Your continued support, friendship and love flowed when I introduced you my now husband, Michael. You made him feel just as welcome as you did me, the first time we met. I thank you so much and I am honored that you both along with Chelsea and Shania (who looked absolutely gorgeous today) accepted our invitation to be part of our special day and more so part of our bridal party. I love you both.
Friendships can be found and forged in many different ways, whether it is be as best friends growing up, new found friends, or even old friendships reignited by chance. True friends will always be there for you in one sense or another.

It is at this point that I must say a very special and heartfelt thank you to our wonderful celebrant today and special friend, John. I first met John 8 years, when he was Chaplain to a previous employer. Along came this open and caring, honest and sincere man, always ready for a chat, or a laugh, but more importantly an ear. There have been times over the last 8 years where John has been my rock, my confidante, my friend when I was at my lowest. It is very hard to put into words, how I feel about this man and just what he did for me, but I guess the most important person knows, so quite simply I will say 'John I feel blessed that I met you all those years ago, and I value the very special friendship that we have, and hope will continue to have.

Finally, I want to mention a very special person, Michael. It sounds silly to say that I wouldn't be here without him but it's true. Michael you've given me everything I could want - love, friendship and a future. It is said that you marry a man like your Dad and if that's true - then kind, generous, loving, caring, supportive, always there when you need him and great to hug is what I'm getting. I am looking forward to my life together with you and thank you for making me feel so special.

You know, Nanna always told me to marry a rich man - I couldn't have married a richer man than Michael. He is rich in inner strength, understanding and kindness, in forgiveness and patience. He is my everything and I am very proud to be Mrs Douthie. I'd like to propose a toast to us - the best is yet to come, and to you, our family and friends for showing your love and support by being here with us tonight.

Our Big Day - Party Time, Destination 'The Lakes Resort'

Onto the party location
Destination - Lakes Resort Hotel
We arrived about 6:40pm, a little behind schedule, but by this time we didn't care, we had so much fun with the cars we could've kept driving. We did the usual 'into the room' for the mock cake cutting, mock first dance etc...but I was more interested in seeing how a culmination of ideas and dreams had come together in what was to be our recpetion room.
I was like a little girl in a lolly shop. GOBSMACKED....It was so beautiful I cried and then I ran onto the dance floor with my arms wide spread and spun around and around in circles amongst 100's of balloons and their flowing silver foil streamers and falling stars. It reminded me of the night Michael proposed. A starry night on the beach. Guests were being entertained with pre dinner drinks at this stage until we were asked to leave the room ready for our grand enterance.
OK...Grand Entrance
We had the bridal party introduced in their pairs until it was our turn. Door closes on bridal party.
We had something a little different up our sleeves.Cast your mind back to the Addams Family, with the big old door chime and squeaky door.
Our DJ, Drew announces that we '(Tanya & Michael) have disappeared sorry about this folks'...a door bell chimes, fog rolls in under the door, a gong chimes and then we make our entrance to Kylie Minogues 'On A Night Like This'...it was perfect, we walked in hand in hand and I did yet another twirll amongst the falling stars.
It was really hard taking everything in. Inbetween entrees of either Tortellini Alla Panna or Shrimp Cocktails and mains the formalities were gotten out of the way. 5 speeches in total ending with our celebrant saying Grace. We had fun with our intro's to our speeches too. My Daddy had 'Daddy Cool', our Best Man had 'Pretty Fly for a White Guy', Michael had 'Can't Get Enough of You Baby' and our celebrant had the theme from Rocky. I had the redubbed versions of Destiny Child's 'Bootylicious'. I say redubbed because where the girls sing 'Michelle, can you handle this? Kelly, can you handle this? Beyonce, can you handle this?' we had dubbed over this to say the our three boys' names. 'Jaimie, can you handle this?, Timmy, can you handle this?, Michael can you handle this?. As I passed each guy I tapped them on the shoulder asking if they could handle this, and I approached the microphone with attitude.
Mains ofBeef Wellington, Asian Style Barramundi or Chicken with Banana, Pineapple and Almonds were served. This kept everyone quiet for a while, well as quiet as you can be with a mouth full anyway. After mains we had our cake cutting ceremony. This was quite cute and funny as Michael has so much trouble lighting 'his' match. Had two takes at doing this. It was fun though and some interesting photos to go with it.
Onto the dancefloor for the bridal waltz. We danced to David Campbell's cover of 'I'm Counting on You', and old Johnny O'Keefe song. We muffed a bit of it, but unfortunately there aint no second chances. I shared the second dance with my Dad to Bob Carlisle's 'Butterfly Kisses' and then the rest of the bridal party joined us on the floor.
From all reports everyone enjoyed the evenings festivities, good food, good wine (I hope....as I don't drink the stuff), good music and good company. What more could anyone ask for? Michael did the garter toss to 'It's Getting Hot in Here' and we even had our DJ, Drew, down on the floor with us. I didn't throw my bouquet. I had one made to pass to one of my bridesmaids as a token of love, luck and happiness within her upcoming marriage to my Brother. They were both very touch by this.
Our last songs for the evening were 'Save The Last Dance' (another David Campbell cover of J. O'K) and 'Time Of My Life' Jennifer Warne & Bill Medley.
Towards the end of the evening, Michael, myself, our Bridal Party and our Videographer headed up to our suite to film the ending for our dvd. Too mych detail to go into, but it basucally ends with us collapsing on the bed, the do not disturb sign on the door and the Bridal Party standing outside with their ears to the door (mmm...wonder what they could be doing type thing). We plan on having the sound of snoring coming from behind the door instead of th much expected horizontal mambo. Something that just has to be seen to be understood.
I guess I could ramble for hours about our perfect day, but I will leave it here. We did follow up the wedding day with a recovery bbq at Mum and Dad's for our bridal party and guests that had travelled to be with us. It was a relaxing and enjoyable time filled with many beautiful gifts all of which we are very appreciative of.

Our Big Day - Strike a Pose!

After we had done the official family photos we started with the creative ones.

This was fun, especially when the two little girls and I got to go and feed the ducks. It mean hitching up the dresses and stepping across a cobblestone footbridge.

We played with the Mustangs and had a ball, even had our driver smoking up the rear end of the car the Michael and I were in over and over again, purely for photographical purposes (of course). I think Ian's words (our driver) were 'You don't have to ask me twice'. Quite a revhead. We even got the old 'Grease' shot, sitting in the front looking back over our shoulders. Only difference here was I was the one behind the wheel.

Unfortunately we didn't get to Woodville Bowl. This was due to the fact that one of my cars was 3/4's hour late, that and the fact that the weather was starting to turn a little bad. Although the few showers that we crossed paths with on the way to Grange Beach were just that.

I think we had about 1 1/2 hours at the beach, it was sunny, it was rainy, we had lightning and we had rainbows. What more could we have asked for? Most memorable moment on the way to the beach, the left hand drive Mustang cutting it too fine against the roundabout and loosing a wheel rim. Neatly caught and picked up by our ducatti escourt, Craig.

Our Big Day - Get me to the Church (ooops Garden) on Time

Our cars were all suppose to be at Mum and Dad's by 1:15pm. Well we had two cars and a bike there by then, then the 3rd rang at about 1:30pm saying he was held up in traffic. 1:40pm, no car, 1:45pm still no car, this went on until we finally managed to track down the mobile number of the driver. 1:55pm and we are finally leaving Mum and Dad's. NOT BAD FOR A 2:00PM CEREMONY.

The drive to the ceremony was a great time, the girls in the other two cars were emjoying themselves, especially the two little ones, turning around and waving to me every couple of minutes. My car actually stalled at the brewery lights, quite funny as all my driver could say was 'there goes all my brownie points'.

My girls escorted me in, and I arrived on the arms of both my Dad and Mum, with my two gorgeous little dogs, Rosie and Dee leading me in, to the strains of Wagner's 'Here comes the Bride' What I can remember hearing of them was beautiful. My gorgeous husband, flanked by his wingmen, was absolutley beaming just as I was at him. I was trying to take in everything and everyone. Actually forgot to take my sunglasses off and had to be reminded of this shortly into the ceremony.

The ceremony was beautiful, but went so quick. I think because I was trying everything in I hadn't realised that John (our Celebrant) had already started. It went for about 1/2 hour and was predominantly created by Michael and I, with touches of John thrown in.

After the signing we released butterflies. This didn't go quite according to plan, damn things were suppose to fly and be free, but they all seemed content to stay in the comfort of their little box. This was cool though as it meant that Michael and I got a chance to handle them. They were so gorgeous.

OK ceremony over, shoes off!

Our Big Day - Getting Ready....

I breathed a sigh of relief when we pulled up at home and the photographer hadn't arrived yet. This I didn't mind, gave me a few moments to breathe although Mum and Dad's was a hive of activity. Walk in the front door, our videographer, Carl, was on time though, d'oh.

Our flowers were sitting on Mum and Dad's kitchen table. My GOD they were so beautiful, and so vibrant. I think my bouquet (which is now down at my florists ready to be preserved, along with one of my bridesmaids bouquets to be preserved around our marriage certificate) was about 60cm or so in length. There were even two little collars of flowers for my two beautiful little dogs.

I made sure that all the girls were dressed first, so at least the photographer had something to work with. Can't remember what time Debra arrived, but it seemed to be just as I was wanting to get dressed. Getting dressed was put on hold as Debra wanted to use my lingerie and jewellery for some still life shots.

I used this time to go out and droool over the first of my cars to arrive. The interesting thing was that I didn't feel nervous about the impending afternoon, but as soon as my second car arrived and they sat there revving the engines I cried, I love my cars and the sound they made was just heaven. Enough drooling, back inside to get dressed. I was pretty quick to dress, but need to fake getting dressed for the photographer and videographer. I am sure we have picked up some really candid and beautiful moments. More so because the bridesmaid that Debra picked to help me pose for photos was Cec, my FSIL. So this was a very special time for us. We used Mum and Dad's purpose built sunroom and pergola for the rest of the photos.

My puppies arrived at the ceremony by Jag no less, and were there waiting my arrival.

Our Big Day - Girlies, Hair and Make Up

We started our wedding day on the Friday night prior (19th) with the Bridal Party at Mum and Dad's for a feed of pizza and a getting to know you time for those who hadn't met our interstate guests. This was a cool time, lots of laughs and food. I walked out into the back room at one stage to see my three big girlss and Mum all huddled around the heater painting their toe nails. Quite cute. The girls all slept over while the boys went home.

With a balmy 27 degree day ahead of us, the day for the girls and I began about 7:30am. Car loads of giggling, carrying on, still alseep girls down to the house of beauty, or the house that was to make us beautiful, my hairdressers. I had arranged the night before for our make up artist to meet us there also, in the change it might save a bit of driving.

We were greeted with soft drinks, o.j, champers if we wanted and platters of dips, apricots, cheese, kabana and rice crackers (how thoughtul). Not a bad idea since some of us hadn't had breakfast. I sent Jodi into bat first. Jane has this idea that we would work on about 3/4's hour per head. Mmmm....could clearly see this was going to go out the window when at the last minute she totally decided she would try something a little different with Jodi's hair. It was well worth it though. I was second to take the stand. 1 1/2 hours later and the work of art was finished, albeit we we had to pull half my hair apart again when it was realised that my veil couldn't be wired in the way that was first planned.

By now our make up artist had arrived, equipped with trowels and plaster. Jodi again had the honour of being first in line. Here began the production line of bum in one chair, then bum in another.

In the middle of this my FSIL had to make a mercy dash to the airport to pick up my little brother, just stepped off a plain from East Timor. He ran her back to the hairdressers and then went to the city to pick up his suit and get a quick haircut himself before getting back to Michaels to get ready with the boys.

While Cec was gone we had Wendy and her two girls, Chelsea and Shania going through the girl process. OK, Cec is back and the production line continues. 'Cec where is your hairpiece' I ask? She starts freaking out, so I threw my car keys at her and another trip to Mum and Dad's was made then straight back into the hairdressers chair.

In the meantime Wendy's husband Craig (our Bridal Party escort) had been running between places acting as unofficial videpgrapher. Mind you his strength was needed when it came time to wire my veil through. Imagine trying to bend coat hanger strength wire while it is attached to someones head.

Keeping in mind our photographer was due to arrive at Mum and Dad's at 12:00pm, I send Wendy, Chelsea and Shania back to Mum and Dad's to get dressed about 11:30am. The last of us was still sitting in the make up chair at 11:55am. All went well though.
